At the end of May in 2015 God led me to Jeremiah 51. As I started reading about the destruction of Babylon, images of America started flooding my mind.
I used to believe that Rome and the Vatican was the Babylon of Revelation 18, so this was a new revelation that forced me into further study. I now believe this chapter speaks directly to the inhabitants of the US about impending judgement. In this article I will discuss:
1. The reasons for judgment on the USA
2. The judgements America can expect according to Jeremiah 51
3. Why America is the Babylon of the last days according to Revelation 18
1. The reasons for judgement
Jeremiah gives one reason for judgement and it all comes back to America’s treatment of Israel.
“You are the apple of my eye” (Zechariah 2:8) and
“I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse.” (Genesis 12:3)
Reason # 1 – The temple
The Lord will take vengeance for his temple (Jeremiah 51:11)
I imagine this verse refers to a future event where Israel’s land is divided and the third temple invaded by the Antichrist as revealed in Daniel 11:39 and again referred to by Jesus in Matt 24:15.
Reason # 2 – Idolatry
“Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols. The images he makes are a fraud; they have no breath in them. They are worthless, the objects of mockery; when their judgment comes, they will perish. (Jeremiah 51:17)
Reason # 3 – Betrayal of Israel
Before your eyes I will repay Babylon and all who live in Babylon for all the wrong they have done in Zion, declares the Lord. (Jeremiah 51:24)
“I am against you, you destroying mountain, you who destroy the whole earth” (Jeremiah 51:25)
Verse 30 reminds us a lot of the gay friendly US military today:
Babylon’s warriors have stopped fighting; they remain in their strongholds.
Their strength is exhausted; they have become weaklings.
Her dwellings are set on fire; the bars of her gates are broken.
Reason # 4 – Violence against Israel
May the violence done to our flesh be upon Babylon, say the inhabitants of Zion. May our blood be upon those who live in Babylon, says Jerusalem. (Jeremiah 51:23)
Reason # 5 – Israel’s slain
Babylon must fall because of Israel’s slain. (Jeremiah 51:49)
Reason # 6 – Foreigners in the Holy place
We are disgraced for we have been insulted and shame covers our faces because foreigners have entered the holy place of the Lord’s house. (Jeremiah 51:51)
2. The judgements that will fall
According to Jeremiah 51, these are the judgements against Babylon:
Judgement # 1 – A destroyer
“I will stir up the spirit of a destroyer against Babylon and the people of Leb Kamai.
I will send foreigners to Babylon to winnow her and to devastate her land; they will oppose her on every side in the day of her disaster. (Jeremiah 51:1 and 2)
Leb Kamai means “those whose hearts are against Me (God and His will).”
Judgement # 2 – Drought
“See, I will defend your cause and avenge you;
I will dry up her sea and make her springs dry. (Jeremiah 51:36)
With California facing one of the most severe droughts on record, Governor Brown declared a drought State of Emergency in January and directed state officials to take all necessary actions to prepare for water shortages.
Judgement # 3 – Water/tsunami
The sea will rise over Babylon; its roaring waves will cover her. (Jeremiah 51:42)
Judgement # 4 – Islam
I will punish Bel in Babylon and make him spew out what he has swallowed. The nations will no longer stream to him. And the wall of Babylon will fall. (Jeremiah 51:44)
Bel is the same as Islam. (4)
Judgement # 5 – Nebuchadnezzar
Who has betrayed the US into the hands of her enemy? The answer is in verse 34:
“Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has devoured us, he has thrown us into confusion,
he has made us an empty jar.
Like a serpent he has swallowed us and filled his stomach with our delicacies,
and then has spewed us out.
Many commentators have linked Obama to the spirit of Nebuchadnezzar .
“This is all about him. He wants the power, and he wants to mold our society into this perverted view he has about how life should be for the masses. Let me stress that it is this Nebuchadnezzar spirit behind him driving his thoughts and emotions, but the end result is the same. The goal by this spirit is to destroy all Christianity from this country, and rid us of all our freedoms.”
3. Why America is Babylon
America is not directly mentioned in the bible but it is concealed in historical patters of the roman empire.
It is also concealed in the pattern of ancient Israel. You may be familiar with Rabbi Jonathan Cahn’s books The Harbinger and The Mystery of the Shemita which discuss this topic in detail.
An expert on the Babylon question is Rick Coombes. In his book America The Babylon he gives numerous reasons and details point-by-point why America is the only country that can be Babylon. Rome and Iraq do not qualify for any of the major characteristics:
To name a few:
#1. Babylon is home to the biggest Jewish population outside of Israel. (Jeremiah 50:8)
#2. The chief city of Mystery Babylon is a “Deep Water Port City”. (Revelation 18:17-19)
#3. It is the key Commercial Nation and Engine of Wealth for the World’s Economy.(Revelation 17 and 18)
#4. It is the principal Commodities Trading Centre. (Rev 18:11-13)
#5. A Leading center of imports and consumption. (Revelation 18: 11, 17-19)
#6. She is also a manufacturing nation. (Revelation 18:22)
#7. Center for Merchandising and Marketing. Her merchants were the mega-merchants of the earth. (Revelation 18: 3, 23; 19:2). This again does not fit the character traits of Rome. It does, however, fit the picture of America.
#8. Known as the World’s “policeman”. Jeremiah 50:23 gives us a Hebrew idiom, “hammer of the whole earth.”
#9. Known for “showing the flag” or “gunboat diplomacy”. (Isaiah 18:1-2) Here we have two Hebrew idioms for the idea of a nation’s navy showing its power. The phrase in verse 1 relates to the idea of “air travel.” The first phrase of verse 2 “…that sends ambassadors by the sea,” another Hebrew idiom for when ancient naval powers would send warships to “show the flag” of friendship or threaten war to unfriendly nations or cities.
#10. Noted for its elegant, luxurious, refined and rich lifestyles: (Isaiah 47: 1-8; Revelation 17: 4-5; 18: 2 –24.) This does not match up with Rome, as it is not capable of reaching such levels of wealthy living standards in our lifetime.
#11. Extremely Wealthy (Jeremiah 51:13; Revelation 18: 2-19)
#12. Sensual, Materialistic lifestyle (Isaiah 47: 8; Revelation 18:14)
#13. The Highest Living Standards (Isaiah 47:1; Revelation 18:14)
#14. Intoxicating high-society lifestyle as a world example to emulate (Revelation 17:2; Revelation 18:3; 14, 23)
#15. Elegant, Sumptuous lifestyle (Revelation 18:14; 23)
#16. Noted for its bright gaudy-colored lights and nightlife with round the-clock partying. (Revelation 18:14) Note the words “dainty” and “goodly.” Dainty is a word in Greek that connotes to 24-hour parties – NY is known as ‘The city that never sleeps’. The word for “goodly” is the Greek word “lampra” from which we get the English word for lamp. In this case it carries the idea of bright, gaudy-colored lights, with idea of “glitzy” lights. Could it be the bright lights of Broadway, Times Square or perhaps even Las Vegas?
#17. Noted for its Drugs and Drug use (Isaiah 47: 9, 12. Revelation 18:23)
#18. Noted for exporting its culture abroad (Revelation 18:14, 22) Hollywood is notable for its place as the home of the world’s entertainment industry.
#19. Noted for being Wasteful and Extravagant (Rev 18: 3, Rev 17: 2)
#20. Massive Population (Rev. 18:15. and Revelation 17:1, 15)
#21. A land of immigrants (Jeremiah 50:16; 51:13; Rev. 17:1 and 15)
#22. Unique and awe-inspiring from its birth right up to its demise (Isa. 18:2)
#23. A remarkably different heritage. (Isaiah 18:2)
#24. Respected-envied and yet hated by the whole world also (Isa. 18:2)
#25. Powerful and Oppressive. (Isaiah 18:2)
